TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement Abdul-Malik al-Houthi described resistance against the Saudi-led aggression on the country as a religious duty.

Addressing a ceremony held on Monday to celebrate the birthday of Islam’s Holy Prophet (PBUH), he hailed the Yemeni people’s Jihad and steadfastness in the resistance against the aggressors.

The ceremony was organized with the participation of a large number of people.

He said the people of Yemen have been inspired and learned lessons from the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and follow those lessons in confronting the arrogant powers.

The Ansarullah leader said striving to reach freedom and independence is a holy Jihad on the path of God.

Saudi Arabia, backed by the US and regional allies, launched the war on Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing popular Ansarullah resistance movement.

The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead, and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen’s infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases.

Yemeni armed forces and allied Popular Committees, however, have grown steadily in strength against the Saudi-led invaders, and left Riyadh and its allies bogged down in the country.

Elsewhere in his remarks at the Monday ceremony, Houthi referred to the issue of Palestine and said that based on their religious principles, Yemenis stand by the Palestinian people until they regain their land and their holy places.

He warned that, as Hezbollah Secretary General Sayed Hassan Nasrallah has emphasized before, any aggression on Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy city of Quds will lead to a regional war.
